The Battle of the Granicus (334 BC) was Alexander's first major engagement against the Persian Empire, and it set the tone for everything that followed.

Background

After crossing the Hellespont into Asia Minor with roughly 35,000–40,000 men, Alexander needed an early victory to establish authority and access the resources of western Persia. The Persian satraps (regional governors) gathered a force of similar size — including a strong contingent of Greek mercenaries — on the eastern bank of the Granicus River (in modern-day Turkey).

The Battle

The Persians positioned their cavalry along the steep riverbank, hoping the terrain would neutralize the Macedonian advantage. Alexander's generals, particularly Parmenion, advised caution and suggested waiting until morning. Alexander refused. He reportedly donned his gleaming helmet with white plumes — deliberately making himself a visible target — and led the assault personally.

The Macedonian cavalry plunged into the river under a hail of javelins. Alexander was nearly killed in the chaos: a Persian nobleman named Spithridates raised his sword over Alexander's head, and only the intervention of his officer Cleitus the Black (who later died at Alexander's own hands) saved his life.

Once Macedonian cavalry broke through, the Persian line collapsed. The Greek mercenaries were surrounded, and Alexander controversially slaughtered most of them — sending the survivors to Macedonia in chains as a message to any Greeks who fought for Persia.

Significance

  • It opened all of Asia Minor to Alexander almost immediately, as city after city surrendered.

  • He liberated Greek cities from Persian rule, positioning himself as their champion.

  • He sent 300 suits of Persian armor back to Athens as an offering to Athena — a powerful piece of propaganda.

  • It proved his willingness to lead from the front, a quality that inspired extraordinary loyalty in his men.

It was a relatively small battle by ancient standards, but strategically it cracked the western Persian Empire wide open.
